So when is the best time to start packing your hospital bag? Personally, I started packing for my 2 births from 37 weeks (even though I had a feeling they would be overdue), like everything to do with labour, you just never know so best to be ready than be taken by surprise. If anything it gives you a peace of mind and its ones less thing to worry about.
Where you give birth shouldn’t be too much of your concern (even if you plan a home birth), I say pack as though you are going into the hospital. Just a heads up, birth plan in most cases never usually
goes completely as planned, so just be ready and open minded. Also, for home births the midwife should tell you of any additional items you might need e.g. birthing pool, but everything else will be similar to having an hospital birth.
Below are some items are I found useful preparing for my 2 sons, please note there are extensive lists around however, here at Mumspired we try to focus on essential items only.
Essentials for Mum:
o Birth plan and hospital notes
o Loose outfits for labour and spares for after - just in case
o Nursing bras if you plan to breastfeed, make sure its big enough for when your milk comes in a few days later
o Breast pads
o Maternity pads
o Disposable briefs
o Toothbrush, Hairbrush, Flannel, Soap, Lip Balm, Deodorant, Hair ties etc
o Towels
o Books, Magazines, Music, Podcasts - because it can get boring waiting for baby to make an appearance
o Front-opening or Loose-fitting nighties or tops if you're going to breastfeed
o Dressing gown and slippers
o Comfortable & Loose outfit to wear home - your belly doesn’t go down immediately
o Fully charged phone to take lots of pictures, keep in touch with friends and family
o Healthy snacks and Energy drinks
o TENS machine if you intend to use one
Essentials for Baby (adjust for multiples):
o Bodysuits, Vests and Sleepsuits
o Hat, Mittens and Socks
o New born nappies
o Blanket
o Muslin Squares
o Going home clothes
o Car seat for the trip home (you won’t be allowed to leave hospital otherwise)
